Selecting proper grades for your model train in miniature hills.

A very real issue when establishing track design and grades is making sure your grades are not too steep for your train. Many people forget their train is a scale model of a real train and so all grades need to take that scale into account when designing your grades.

Beginning hobbyists do not see the relationship between their model and the grades they are trying to establish in hills and valleys.

To the scale model train that small 6 inch hill may be too steep for the locomotive to climb while pulling the cars. You must remember to create a grade that does not climb too steep for the scale of your model. The best way to create realistic grades for your model train is to view your layout from the same level your locomotive will be operating. What you need to do is get eye level with the track to envision the flow of your train.

As you design and build your track take extra care in the placement of your pieces of track. Many times a beginner will not see the changes in spacing between the rails.

So what you have to do is examine your track with a fine tooth comb looking for changes in spaces between the rails, sudden bumps or severe dips and just plain bad track connections. Make sure you fix any areas of concern because if you can see problems in your track your train will not operate correctly.

The better you examine your track in the beginning the better your train will operate and the fewer problems you will have with your track. The grade of your track should be in proportion to the scale you have chosen for your railroad.

Most people believe that a 2 or even a 3 percent grade is reasonable. So the major issue is the size of your layout. If you are using a 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of plywood for your layout, creating an overpass where your train can pass over another piece of track may be a problem.

The important thing is to realize these issues before you start planning your layout, so you do not have to tear it up and start over again. The most enjoyment is to create a layout that is fun to operate and to have small hills and towns that make it realistic.

Some hobbyist use rail yards and crossings to give their layout that realistic feeling.

Everyone enjoys running a railroad which has been designed properly and operates with little or no problems. The most important thing is to have fun while you are building and then operating your model railroad.
